BioProcessing Laboratory
Jerry in Bioprocessing LabThe 2,074 sq. ft. BioProcessing Laboratory has three controlled temperature - humidity environment chambers, four controlled temperature chambers of various sizes, drying ovens, and support equipment for research on unit operations such as drying, mixing, grinding, and extraction. Recent studies have involved drying and separation of petals from marigold flowers, storage of ground marigold petals, SFE extraction of oil from pecans, orienting fruit for non-destructive on-line quality detection, and stone milling of mustard seed.

Paul with DryerThis photo shows an OSU built rotary dryer being tested for drying and separating the petals from marigold flowers. Marigold petals are a source of xanthophyll, currently used as an ingredient in poultry feed to insure yellow egg yolks and to add color to the meat.
