Food Processing Option

The food processing option involves the design of processes, products, and equipment used in the production of food, feed, fiber, pharmaceuticals, and other biomaterials. Practical applications can involve all aspects of processing, including packaging, storage, preservation, energy utilization, and environmental protection.

Grocery store aisle
Most of the items that you buy in a grocery store are "value-added products." Food processing engineers play an important role in developing and producing these products because of their understanding of the unique engineering properties of food material.

Stress testing of foods

Engineering properties such as stress and strain affect a consumers perception of the texture of a food product. Testing food product response to applied forces enables food processing engineers to control the quality of a product.

Peanut Butter (PB) Slices

P.B. Slices were developed at the OSU's Food and Ag Products Center by BAE professor Dr. Dani Bellmer. Her invention earned her a spot on the television game show "To Tell the Truth."
